- Inspect your furnace visually
- Look for black soot around your furnace. Black soot means that your furnace could be burning more than oil and needs to be checked by a professional
- Look for black smoke. Black smoke means that your machine isn’t burning oil completely
- Listen for unusual noises like rattling or vibrating from your furnace
- Turn your furnace off & wait for it to cool completely. Once cooled, use a long hose vacuum to clean all of the dust within the furnace. This will prevent dust and burnt particles from traveling through the air within your home
- Change your air filter – Remember to change your air filter as often as recommended in your owner’s manual, but more often if you have pets
